After Age of Empire 3 could not reach the high bar, a new development studio is now trying its luck with Relic. Age of Empires 4 should revive the series apart from HD versions and remasters.

A daunting task, therefore, lies ahead. It remains to be seen whether Age of Empires 4 is up to this challenge. But we have already collected all the known information and here we can tell you what is known about the game.

Release: When will Age of Empires 4 be released?

The publisher Microsoft has not yet commented on an exact release date. The title is due to appear in autumn 2021. This allows the period from September to November to be narrowed down. It was announced in advance that the developers were already trying hard.

Trailer: Can you already see something?

In November 2019, after a long wait, Microsoft released a real trailer. This trailer was even announced as gameplay reveal, but that was a bit too much of a promise. It's an in-engine trailer that shows the graphics and some game scenes, but no actual gameplay.

Innovations & Gameplay: What Makes Age of Empires 4 Different?

It is certain that Age of Empire 4 should be a strategy game in real time again and how Age 2 plays in the Middle Ages. The developers at Relic are also returning to earlier features. For example, there should be four more resources to mine.

Base building will be freer again. A new automatic decoration system is used. Here, for example, citizens simply stroll across the street and ensure a realistic cityscape. Walls also meander through the landscape. Sieges should be more in focus.

With Age of Empires 4, Relic wants to keep the feeling of the past and still bring in a few new ideas.

Multiplayer: how is multiplayer?

Age of Empires 2 is played up and down in multiplayer to this day. It goes without saying that Age of Empires 4 will also be launched with a multiplayer mode. It remains unknown whether there are any particular innovations here.

So far, the developers have only announced that a total of eight players can play at the same time and that quite a large army is possible. With one exception, the armies will deploy without hero units: Kahns lead the Mongol troops, who can buff their own troops with a signal whistle.

Peoples: Which factions are playable?

So far, eight races have been confirmed for Age of Empires 4. There are definitely the English, Mongols, Chinese, and the Delhi Sultanate. Nothing is yet known about the four other races.

For this, the developers want to invent a lot more differences and special functions for each faction. As a rush faction, the Mongols are said to be much more different from the English. So their base, recruitment, and economy could stand out clearly from those of the other nations.
